1.
What is “Sandplay Therapy?
Sandplay therapy is non verbal way of expressing feelings and thoughts. It can help people connect with their inner world. In sandplay process, people consider the sand tray as safe environment, and they make their own world by using sand and miniatures. Sharing process with therapist helps looking one's inner world and is in and of itself quite healing.
<Procedure>
(1) Creating: The client takes the
miniatures and begins to build a world. The therapist sits down with the client
in front of the sand tray. The therapist draws a picture of the tray and makes
notes of all miniatures.
(2) Exploring: When the client states he/she is finished, the therapist asks many questions about each miniature and the relationship
to the other miniatures in the world. The client will translate for the
therapist.
(3) Ending: Before leaving the
world the therapist will always end the sand tray session with some type of a
positive or "hope" statement.
(4) Translating: After the client
leaves the therapist will translate the tray using a Symbol dictionary to try
to better understand the client and their chosen miniatures. However, it is
always the client’s translation that is accurate translation.

How to perform better on the
job?
-Need some skills to work well
(1)
Communication Skill

To
communicate with clients is basic thing of psychotherapy. Therapists and
clients have to share feelings by communication.
*How to get communication skill?
-Try to use proper words. Most of clients who visit psychotherapists
are usually sensitive and in a somewhat emotional state. Therefore therapists
have to choose words that don’t hurt clients.
-Try to speak in a gentle voice and soft tone. This kind of voice can
comfort people.
-Try to listen carefully and use some gestures like nod to show
client that you are listening to them. It will gives clients trust, so they are
likely to open their mind.
(2)
Empathic Ability
To understand
clients well, therapists need ability to empathize with them.
*How to get
empathic ability?
-Put yourself in
client’s shoes. Imagine how they feel like. Then you are more likely to know
them.
-Get rid of
prejudice. Prejudice is one of the worst thing that can make you have closed
mind, and closed mind will hinder you from empathizing your client’s feelings.
-Try to embrace
client’s feelings and thoughts even though it is different from yours. Everyone has different background and environment. So, just embrace them.
(3)
Interpreting Skill
Therapists have to translate miniatures that clients choose and
interpret their behaviors and their world. Therefore, interpreting skill is
significant for sandplay therapists.
*How to get interpreting skill?
-Read and study the book about psychology and meanings of symbols.
There are a lot of examples and useful information in books.
-Accumulate experience. Sometimes therapist use inference to
interpret meanings of miniatures and behaviors. Then a lot of experience will
be helpful because there are some similar cases.
Sandplay therapy is a fun and good way to know
about your real feelings deep inside of you.
